November is Sigma Delta Pi’s National Charter Month!

National Charter Month commemorates graduate student Ruth Barnes’ founding of Sigma Delta Pi on November 14, 1919 at the University of California, Berkeley. Highlight your chapter and its activities during the month of November.  This is also a wonderful opportunity to locate and display your chapter’s charter!

 How can your chapter commemorate?:

1) Plan an initiation ceremony in November!!!  An induction of new members can be held any time of the year, and many chapters hold multiple initiations annually (once received, all orders processed within 24 hours).

2) Participate in our 3rd annual Facebook Birthday Cake Picture Competition to celebrate National Charter Month and Sigma Delta Pi’s 96th birthday.

To enter:

  1. a) During the month of November, chapters are invited to post a picture of their unique Sigma Delta Pi b-day cakes at our FB page:
  2. b) The pictured cake must include a reference, etched in icing on the cake, to Sigma Delta Pi’s 96th b-day.
  3. c) It must be an actual cake that displays the Sigma Delta Pi logo.
  4. d) for the accompanying “description,” include the name of the originating chapter and institution.  For example: “Gamma Gamma, Marquette University.”

The winning picture will be featured during the entire month of December at Sigma Delta Pi’s FB page, and the winning chapter will receive an award certificate.  Cakes will be judged on artistic merit and originality.

3) Execute in November any chapter-sponsored activity that supports Sigma Delta Pi’s mission.

3rd Annual Best Practices Session at the 2015 AATSP Conference

Congratulations to the following three student members of Sigma Delta Pi for being selected to participate in our 3rd annual “Best Practices” Session at the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese Conference in Denver, CO in July 2015:

Paige Bergan of Truman State University: “Utilization of Committees to Achieve Chapter Goals”Chrysanthemum Gorospe of Marquette University: “Milwaukee Schools Ally Together”
Mayra Jaquez of the University of Northern Colorado: “Poesía a la lengua española”

We thank all our student members who submitted such outstanding proposals this year.
Please plan to join us at the AATSP conference next summer to listen to our student presenters.

Each student presenter will receive a $300 travel stipend plus paid conference registration courtesy of Sigma Delta Pi and a complimentary awards banquet ticket courtesy of the AATSP (American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese).  However, the same student is expected to secure travel-related funding for all remaining expenses through his/her college/university, either via the academic departments, the dean’s or provost’s office, the office of student activities, or other institutional sources.   Colleges/universities often provide funding for students presenting at conferences.  Sigma Delta Pi is unable to provide monetary support beyond the $300 travel stipend and conference registration per selected student.

For information on the AATSP conference in July 2015, please visit the website: Any questions should be directed to the Executive Director:

The “Best Practices” Session is useful for all our members, both faculty and students alike. Educators are reminded of the importance of empowering our adept student leaders with opportunities to create, organize and execute a wide array of activities that reflect Sigma Delta Pi’s mission.  Via the innovation, dedication and efforts of student leaders/officers, Sigma Delta Pi has become much more than a recognition society, a message that is reflected in all student “Best Practices” session.  Students who attend this session will be reminded that invaluable leadership opportunities and experiences can be enjoyed simply by working closely and diligently with one’s chapter adviser.  Sigma Delta Pi’s faculty advisers at over 600 chapters across the country welcome and urge student collaboration, and employers seek such student activity to distinguish outstanding candidates from competitive applicant pools.
